Sustainable Business Practices With Hollingsworth
Sustainability is a critical part of the modern supply chain, resulting in cost savings and increased efficiency in addition to benefiting the environment and reducing harmful impacts. Hollingsworth puts priority on our sustainability initiatives, which have proven success in recycling hundreds of tons of materials each year.
Supply chain sustainability is a huge issue for many companies. Brands are recognizing that sustainability is important in the way that it impacts supply chain systems, the environment and our resources.
The consumer is also becoming more conscious about retail businesses and their sustainable practices.
How Is Hollingsworth’s Supply Chain Sustainable?
Hollingsworth achieves sustainability in our supply chain management and other services by:
- Locating warehouses and fulfillment centers optimally to reduce transportation distances (emissions)
- Arranging warehouses to enable the least amount of product movement and removement, saving energy and fuel
- Optimizing the supply chain for minimum usage of resources
In 2016, Hollingsworth recycled a total of 817.05 tons. This saved numerous resources, most notably:
- 13,890 trees
- 5,719,343 gallons of water
- 3,431,606 KW of electricity
- 2,778 yards of landfill
- 334,990 gallons of fuel
- 49,023 pounds of air pollution
Federal International, which offers smart solutions for recycling and waste, presented us with a recycling award to recognize our efforts.
Sustainability In Our Automotive Department
Hollingsworth also operates a core return center led by Mike Hart, Director of Operations for Hollingsworth Core Logics (HCL) department.
The one thing that most people do not recognize with the core business is the positive impact that it has on the environment.
At first glance, we receive used auto parts that are often times covered in dirt and oil. We clean and recycle the metal to create new parts or rebuild the component and resell it. Through this process, our products stay out of landfills and conserve resources.
About 50% of an original starter is recovered in the remanufacturing process. This can result in annual savings in the U.S. of 8.2 million gallons of crude oil from steel manufacturing, 51,500 tons of iron ore, and 6,000 tons of copper and other metals.
The yearly raw materials saved by remanufacturing worldwide would fill 155,000 railroad cars forming a train 1,993 miles long.
The yearly energy savings by remanufacturing worldwide equals the electricity generated by five nuclear power plants or 10,774,000 barrels of crude oil, which corresponds to a fleet of 233 oil tankers.
Rebuilt ENGINES require 50% of the energy and 67% of the labor that is required to produce new engines.
